Wavin' Flag

Good afternoon Wildcats!

Several of you have asked me about the song/dance that we learned in PE a couple of weeks ago. The song is Wavin' Flag by K'Naan, and we danced to the Spanish version of the song. I thought it might be fun for you to teach the dance to your family. Check it out...

Happy Wednesday!

Cardio Kids

Hey Wildcats!

Did you know that we have an AWESOME running club for the intermediate students (3rd-5th) here at Wilson?! It's called Cardio Kids, and its free! There are multiple times per week that you can accumulate mileage to earn your way into the Mile Clubs. This is a perfect way to work towards your 60 minutes of recommended moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7:45 until the bell rings, you can walk or run the Wildcat Trail - what a great way to kick start the day! All you need to do is fill out a permission slip, and you are ready to go! If you can't make it to school that early, don't worry! You can also participate in Cardio Kids during lunch recess on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. If you run at lunch recess, you DO NOT need a permission slip.

Parents - if you are interested in volunteering to count laps during one of those times, please let me know :) We have a parent who has spearheaded this program, and it would be great to round up a few volunteers. Please encourage your Wildcats to get as much exercise as possible during the school day - exercise not only helps our bodies but our brains as well! Thanks for checking in!

Have a good weekend,

Miss Stone

Catch Up

Hey Wildcats!

It's been a while since I checked in :) The last couple of weeks we have been working on throwing and catching skills - the intermediate grades then incorporated those skills into some cooperative games while the primary grades continued to focus on the fundamentals.

This week we transitioned into soccer skills. Our focus this week was on dribbling, trapping, and short passes. This unit is always fun for me because I feel like I learn a lot - quite a few of the students have extensive soccer experience, and I grew up in a town that didn't have organized soccer! I really need to do my homework for this unit!

Several of the teachers at Wilson started a 50 days of moving chart. We have a chart of 50 squares, and we fill out a square each time get a half hour of exercise on a given day. Feel free to join us! We are all trying to complete 50 days by December...since it's a little later in the game, you can always just come up with a reward as a family for when you finish the chart :) Thanks for checking in!

Teamwork!

Hey Wildcats!
Another week in the books, and more skills practiced and gained! This week in PE, we focused on the skills necessary for successful teamwork - we discussed communication (both positive and negative), compromise, flexibility, sharing, and trust.
I like to start each year out with cooperation activities. These activities and experiences can be very bonding for students as they interact with new classmates, and they also create great conversations and learning opportunities. These are life skills!
Here is a snapshot of the week -

Have a great weekend!

Welcome to 2017-2018

Welcome back Wildcats!!!

A whole new year! It's been SO great to see all of you this week! We covered a ton of information, even though we only had 30 minutes this week. We played some partner tag games to get our hearts beating as we discussed and practiced what it looks like to be safe, respectful, and responsible in PE. I was so happy to see all of you sweating and smiling again. I really miss that over the summer!

I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are ready to be back! This was a very busy yet relaxing, fun summer for me. I am always glad to be back in the swing of things though. I spent the summer hiking, mountain biking, camping, playing at the beach, and enjoying some family time. Hopefully all of you got a chance to get out and enjoy the beautiful PNW as well.  Please check back to see what we are doing throughout the year - you can get an idea of what we're learning in PE, resources for home, and information concerning wellness related activities at Wilson. Thanks!

Wellness Fair Recap

Good afternoon, Wildcats!

I just wanted to share a few photos from this year's Wellness Fair, as well as a video to give you ideas for making an obstacle course of your own. Thank you so much to all of you who were able to join us for the fun and sweat :)

Experiencing how heart rate responds to exercise

Checking out an easy way to track activity level - pedometers

Learning how to make smart food choices by building our own trail mix

This is an obstacle course I set up for my nephew last summer, and he loved trying to beat his previous time :) An obstacle course is a really easy, inexpensive way to keep your Wildcat active and entertained for an evening. Try one out in your own backyard!

Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend!

Wilson Wellness Fair May 25th!!!

Hey Wildcats!

I just wanted to remind all of you that this Thursday, May 25th is our annual Wilson Wellness Fair! The fair will run from 6:00 to 7:30 in the Wilson gym and outside on the North Park side. Looks like we are going to have some great weather for the event!

We have some really fun activities in the works for the fair, and I hope all of you will take time to stop by. There will be an obstacle course, FREE snacks, physical activity stations, nutrition stations, and a FREE raffle with participation in the various stations.

Make sure to wear your exercise clothes parents - your student is eligible for bigger prizes if you participate in the stations along with them. The first 50 Wildcats to turn in their "passport to health" will receive a free t-shirt. We have some really great raffle prizes this year including a bike, skateboard, sports equipment, fitness equipment with Garmin Vivofit, Play it Again Sports gift cards, and family passes to Timberhill Athletic Club. This event is completely free, and it is a great opportunity to have some fun and get sweaty as a family.

Hope to see you there,

Outdoor Challenge

Happy Friday Wildcats!

With the beautiful weather this week, we were able to get outside a bit for PE. We continued with our Frisbee unit, but we also took advantage of the sunny weather to complete an Outdoor Challenge. The students worked in teams of 3 - 5 to finish nine different tasks to challenge their physical fitness.

This is our list of challenges...

Run a lap around the Wildcat trail
Skip to the monkey bars and hang for 15 seconds
Run and touch all 4 fences surrounding Wildcat Park
Gallop to the swings and do 10 squats
Run to Wildcat Park and do 5 push-ups with hands on the bench seat
Walk to the basketball hoop and do 10 jumping jacks
Skip to the soccer goal and reach toward your toes for 15 second stretch
Run to Wildcat Park and go down the slide
Slide to the four square court and 3 people a high 5

See Miss Stone when your team finishes :)

Creating your own Outdoor Challenge course is a fun and effective way that you can motivate your Wildcat to get some exercise on the weekends or in the evenings. Wildcat Park is a perfect space for doing a family challenge like this one. Thanks for checking in!

Knock them down...

Hi Wildcats!

Hope you had a great weekend! This week we are working on Frisbee skills. This unit will culminate with some Frisbee golf and modified Ultimate Frisbee for the upper grades. Check out our first activity - Knock Them Down!

Try to take advantage of breaks in the rain, and get outside for some exercise this week :) Thanks for checking in!

DYNAMITE!

Hey Wildcats!

You all learned another dance - DYNAMITE! Nice work, Wildcats! I am so proud of how the majority of you stepped up to the challenge and worked through any sort of uneasiness about dancing! The end result is awesome! My next challenge is for you to teach your family the dance :)

Check out some of our third graders get their groove on -

The other excitement of the week was getting to try out climbing the rope. This is a challenge! Most of the Wildcats are still working to increase their muscular strength enough to climb the rope, but a few students from each class were able to reach the top. Tree climbing is a great way to practice for this challenge and build muscular strength. Thanks for checking in!

Have a great Spring Break,

Run for Fun!

Great job Wildcats!

You all stepped up to the challenge and kept your body moving for the entire Fun Run! That was hard work, but it is really good for us to push our bodies to their limit. I'm guessing some of you woke up a little bit sore the next day - I certainly did!

Watch our Kinders cruise around the gym -

As we move our way through winter, I always observe a little bit of a dip in our cardiovascular endurance, based on our PACER test scores. If you want to know more about the PACER test, you can check out my previous post titled "PACER - what's that!" Even though the weather doesn't always cooperate, it is still so important to get our bodies the exercise they need every day. How much exercise do we need every day? Check out this link to see what the CDC suggests -

https://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/basics/children/

Mr. Beasley was just telling me about an activity he did with his family to motivate some movement. He called it the Fro-Yo Challenge - he challenged his girls to run four laps around the track at Linus Pauling, and then he took them to get frozen yogurt. Try it out with your Wildcat! Thanks for checking in!

Pass, Set, Hit!

Hey Wildcats!

We wrapped up our basketball unit this week and started a volleyball unit. With one lesson in the books, we made huge strides in our forearm passing. The use of balloons as volleyballs allowed us to focus on our form, as it really slows down the movement.

Wildcats - I was so impressed with your ability to focus even with a fun toy right at your fingertips :) The critical elements we discussed and and worked on were 1) thumbs parallel with hands together 2) arms straight with no swing 3) push the ball to the target using the legs.

Here are some of our third grader students showcasing their skills...

We also did a 5 minute preview of the Fun Run, so that students knew what to expect next week. Our goal is just to keep moving our bodies the entire time! Don't forget to send your Wildcat with good shoes for moving and some water. Thanks!

Have a great weekend!

Can't Stop the Feeling - video!

Can't Stop the Feeling!

Hi Wildcats!

We wrapped up our hockey unit and moved onto our basketball unit; BUT before starting basketball, we learned a new dance to the song Can't Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake.  It was a blast! I don't think I've ever had so much fun teaching a dance!

In the past, I have used more typical PE dances (ie macarena, chicken dance, hand jive, etc). Using a popular new song really seemed to motivate these Wildcats to get moving. We learned it K-5 which was a pretty grand endeavor for our Kindergartners, but they did great!

I wanted to post a video of the Wildcats performing the dance. At the last minute on Thursday morning, I invited all the classes down to the gym to dance during morning recess. We had over 150 students show up to the gym! I was blown away! All that to say, I didn't get a video 😊 However, after such a great turnout, I am wanting to open up the gym during rainy day recesses in the future to offer some extra physical activity for our Wildcats.

Dancing is a great way to get some exercise, especially on a rainy day. Try dancing with your kids at home - all you have to do is move your body. I used to feel incredibly uncomfortable dancing! It is an acquired comfort for some people...the earlier, the better 😊 Dance it out, Wildcats! I will hopefully post a video of the dance very shortly, and your Wildcat can teach you the dance!

Have a great weekend!

High flying...and possibly high sticking

Hey there, Wildcats!

Amidst the snow days and MLK Jr. Day, we have been working on our hockey unit. The students have been learning the proper grip, stick handling, passing, and shooting. * POP QUIZ - have your Wildcat show you how to hold a hockey stick *

Hockey was always one of my favorite units in PE when I was growing up, and the students really seem to be enjoying it. We have seen a great deal of improvement since the beginning of the unit. We started game play this week - we are just doing 1 vs. 1 games which really gives students an opportunity to work on their puck handling skills.

Your Wildcats hard at work...

Have a great weekend! Try to find a break in the rain to get out for a walk :)

Scooters!!!

Hey Wildcats!

It has been a wonky week! With no school Monday and a snow day on Wednesday, the PE schedule got a little bit tricky. I saw some of you twice, and others, I didn't get to see at all! Rather than start a new unit with this kind of schedule, I decided to have a fun-filled fitness lesson with the scooter boards :) We played Scooter Hoopla, Scooter Triathlon, and Alligator Tag. One thing is for sure...we know how to have fun while we move our bodies!

Check out our Scooter Triathlon -
