Small-sided Hockey

Hey there, Wildcats!

Welcome to the New Year...it's been a while since I've posted about PE happenings. We just finished up our hockey unit today, and we will start up our basketball unit on Monday.  The students have been learning the proper grip, stick handling, passing, and shooting. We finished the unit with some small-sided hockey games.

Small-sided games recreate the tactical and physical elements of the sport while increasing participation, fitness demands, and success rate. This is accomplished by making changes to the rules or environment of the game.

Let me offer an example - in our hockey games, we played 3 vs. 3 to increase participation. In order to score, at least 2 members of the team needed to contact the puck during the possession. To increase success, there were six goals that either team could shoot into, rather than the standard two goals.

I'm wishing I had a video to show you, but unfortunately I was having to much fun playing...I mean teaching :) Thanks for checking in!
