Jump Jump Jump!

Hi Wildcats!

We had the privilege this week of having the Dallas, Oregon Rope Busters Competition Team come to our school. The Rope Busters are a group of about 100 elementary and middle school students who work diligently to perfect and perform a variety of long and short jump rope skills. They came over to Wilson two days this week for workshops during PE classes and a performance.

This is such a great and unique opportunity we have here at Wilson! Students worked in groups of two or three with a Rope Buster. The primary grades focused mainly on long jump rope, while the intermediate grades worked on short jump rope skills and tricks. Wildcats, you did AWESOME!

The coach and coordinator of the program, Jim Dent, commented to me that he likes coming to Wilson because of the students. He said they "show respect and try so hard - even if they know they aren't the best at jump rope." That is quite the compliment from someone who does workshops and performances all over Oregon. Way to go, Wildcats!!!

Enjoy the weekend,

Nutrition Nuggets

Wildcats! Wildcats!

Since Thanksgiving is coming up, nutrition seemed like the perfect topic to cover. We had a blast this week moving our bodies while learning some nutritional nuggets that will help us make good choices when it comes to our plates.
Wildcats completed a relay to categorize food items as "everyday", "most days", or "sometimes" options. It's always amusing to see how many younger students hold the conviction that french fries are healthy because they are made of potatoes :) We also played Grocery Cart which allowed us to classify food items according to food groups. Take a look at our video to see why we enjoyed this activity so much...

Have a great weekend,

Using Our Legs

Hey there Wildcats!

For the past two weeks we've been working on our soccer skills. We learned the technique and form for trapping, dribbling, passing, and shooting. I was so impressed with how much growth I saw throughout the unit! Check out Mrs.Villani's class showcasing their skills during mini-games of 3 vs 3 soccer...

Mr. Bradley's class

During the fitness portion of each lesson, the primary and intermediate students gained some head knowledge to go along with their physical skills. The primary students focused on this question - how can you tell that you just exercised? The intermediate students are learning the different areas of health-related fitness - what area of health-related fitness are you improving when you take the dog for a walk? My hope is for our Wildcats to have an understanding of what constitutes moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), so they reach the goal of obtaining at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

Did you know that you can sign a permission slip for your Wildcat to walk or run the trail before school? I went out to run  the trail on Tuesday with our students, and I was amazed! I love that our students utilize this trail, as well as their free time, to get in some much needed exercise. My goal is to walk or run with the students every Tuesday. Sign your Wildcat up today!

Thanks for checking in,

Move Your Wildcat!

Hello Wildcats!

We are finished with our first "skills-based" unit - throwing! Great job! Thanks for your hard work :) Your throwing looks great, but I'm even more impressed with your behavior. Thanks for being safe, respectful, and responsible!

Your class Wildcats are on the move! * When an entire class is exceeding or meeting the expectations in PE, their Wildcat moves along the "Wildcat Trail" * Each class has reached the end of our Wildcat Trail, and some classes are just about to make their second finish. Leading the pack are Mrs. Boock and  Miss Mohler's classes. Right on their tails are Mrs. Meyers and Mrs. Gray's classes. Way to work hard, Wildcats!

Speaking of trails, Wildcat Trail and Wildcat Park provide a perfect combination for you and your family to get some exercise together. Walk or run a lap or two around the track, and then use the park structures to perform muscular strength exercises. Take advantage of this awesome place right in our neighborhood!

Throwing and Growing

Hey Wildcats!

For the past two weeks in PE, we have been working on throwing and catching. We utilized a variety of equipment, including footballs, yarn balls, playground balls, and gatorballs. We played several different games - which one was your favorite?  These games and equipment allowed us to focus on different aspects of the throw and catch. What were the cues for throwing? What were the cues for catching?

Check out Mrs. Boock's class playing scuba diver -

Last Wednesday was Walk and Bike to School Day! Wilson has MANY students who choose to walk or bike to school everyday. This is a great way to incorporate small bouts of physical activity into your daily routine. If you live within a mile of Wilson, make a goal to walk to school at least two days a week. This small change helps your body as well as our environment!

More physical activity not only improves our physical health, but it also promotes academic achievement. Check out this article to learn more -

Getting back in the groove...

Hey Wildcats!

It was a great first full week of school in physical education! We were busy learning the expectations and putting them into practice. Students are learning the benefits of working together as a team, as we focus on games that require cooperation. Pop quiz - what should your body look and sound like when I blow the train whistle?

I wish we had more time to cover ALL of the crucial information related to living a healthy lifestyle; but, unfortunately, with only an hour of physical education each week, we barely skim the surface. One important aspect of a healthy lifestyle is proper nutrition. Follow these links to learn more...

Welcome back!!!

Welcome back Wildcats!
Hope you all had a fantastically active summer! I'm so excited to hear about your summer adventures - biking, hiking, swimming, and moving! I enjoyed hiking with my dogs and mountain biking with friends.
This blog will be a resource for parents and students to find information regarding physical activity and wellness throughout the school year. Check it out to see what we've been doing in physical education and find ideas for activity at home. See you soon!
