4/17 PE!

Happy Friday!

Here is the weekly CHALLENGE and BONUS :) For those of you who noticed that I've changed the name of the blog, this was done because I teach PE at two schools in Corvallis! I teach at Wilson primarily, but I also teach a few classes over at Mt. View - so welcome both Wildcats and Eagles!

CHALLENGE - take a nice long walk through the neighborhood (bonus points if the whole family goes together) and complete the Nature Scavenger Hunt - for even more of a challenge, do this activity while running, skipping, jumping, sliding, hopping, leaping, etc!

Adjusting to the new norm...distance PE!

Hey Wildcats (and some Alligators)!

What a strange few weeks! I hope you all are doing well, staying healthy, and adjusting to our new normal for the next little while. Thank you all, in advance, for your understanding and flexibility as we, as teachers, figure all of this out. There is certainly a learning curve!

When I heard that we would be making the shift to distance learning, I thought "what in the world does distance learning for elementary PE look like!?!" While current restrictions we face in terms of social distancing, access to facilities, access to equipment, etc. may cause a shift in our lifestyle, one thing we CAN STILL ENGAGE IN IS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. And while it might look different than it has in the past, we are all in this together. Now, maybe more than ever, physical activity is crucial to maintaining our physical and mental health.

Each week, I will be providing resources and suggestions for ways that you, as a whole family, can stay active throughout this time. Are there barriers? Of course. Are we always motivated? Nope. Do we have time constraints and other responsibilities? Definitely.  But WE CAN DO THIS! Adults, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day - it doesn't have to be all at once! Kids, aim for at least...come on, I know you know this...60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

In an effort to not overwhelm you, I will keep this very basic to start out. These are options for the whole family. Pick your poison :) Keep it fun...physical activity shouldn't be a chore.

Ideas...
Walk around the neighborhood - include short sprints to the next mailbox, tree, etc
Learn a dance off of YouTube
Download a free exercise app - Sworkit Kids or Nike Training Club
Create an obstacle course in the backyard
Jump rope challenges (right foot, left foot, can-can, skiers, etc) - pretend if you don't have one!

Thanks for checking in! Please leave a comment if you enjoyed a physical activity together, or you created your own! Looking forward to hearing from you!

Working together...

Hello Wildcats!

We've been doing some cooperation activities in PE to hone our skills...and, unfortunately, I've felt under the weather which required a few sick days. As we start our throwing unit next week, I'm hoping we can continue to focus on what it looks like to be a good teammate - we'll discuss communication (both positive and negative), compromise, flexibility, sharing, and trust. PE provides a very natural platform for learning how to work with others.

In other news outside of PE, Mrs. Lamar, one of our wonderful educational assistants at Wilson, is starting the running club back up! Wilson Wildcat Running Club will start next week! It will be a little different than in years past. It will be taking place during morning recess. For now, it will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for grades 3-5. She plans to add in K-2 on Tuesday and Thursday once location and logistic details get figured out. Secondly, the club will involve more than just counting laps. Running is so much more than that! She plans to include running games and relays, as well as peer bonding activities. This is a great opportunity during the school day, so please take advantage of this time!

First weeks at a glance...

Mrs. Kramer's class playing PAC-man tag

Mrs. McCracken's class playing Hula Hoop Hang On

Mrs. Gough's class getting off of their sinking boat!

Mrs. Michalski's class moving as one turtle

Mrs. Villani's class playing Hog Call - getting grouped with your eyes closed while making your animal sound

Thanks so much for checking in!

Welcome to 2019-2020!

Welcome back, Wildcats!

It feels good to be getting back into routine! It's been SO wonderful to see you all this week!  We covered a lot in PE in these last three days! And to be honest, I'm getting tired of hearing myself talk! We moved our bodies as we discussed and practiced what it looks like to be safe, respectful, and responsible in PE. I was so happy to see all of you sweating and smiling again.

From the sounds of it, you all had a great summer and are ready to be back at school :) This was a very fun, busy summer for me. I went on a honeymoon to Costa Rica - we had to postpone the trip because my husband and I got the flu the day after our wedding this spring. I spent the rest of the summer hiking, mountain biking, camping, playing at the beach, and enjoying time with family.

Hopefully all of you got a chance to get out and enjoy the beautiful PNW as well.   Please check back to see what we are doing throughout the year - you can get an idea of what we're learning in PE, resources for home, and information concerning wellness related activities at Wilson. Thanks!

Wellness Fair 2019

Good afternoon, Wildcats!

I just wanted to share a few photos from this year's Wellness Fair, as well as a video to give you ideas for making an obstacle course of your own. Thank you so much to all of you who were able to join us for the fun and sweat :)

Getting our groove on at Zumba!

Utilizing a FREE app called Nike Training Club, for at-home workouts

Even Wilson joined the fun!

Obstacle course starting line

Some of our 5th grade boys competing against the OSU woman basketball players

Wilson was one of two schools to win the Oregon School Wellness Award this year! Way to go, Wildcats!

This is an obstacle course I set up for my nephew, and he loved trying to beat his previous time :) An obstacle course is a really easy, inexpensive way to keep your Wildcat active and entertained for an evening. Try one out in your own backyard!

Hope you can get out in the rain this weekend for some exercise!

Winter Heart Health

Great job Wildcats!

You all stepped up to the challenge and kept your body moving for the entire Fun Run! That was hard work, but it is really good for us to push our bodies to their limit. I'm guessing some of you woke up a little bit sore the next day - I certainly did!

After working hard for the Fun Run, we started our volleyball unit which has been a blast. I love watching the students catch on to skills that are unfamiliar.

As we move our way through winter, I always observe a little bit of a dip in our cardiovascular endurance, based on our PACER test scores. If you want to know more about the PACER test, you can check out my previous post titled "PACER - what's that!" Even though the weather doesn't always cooperate, it is still so important to get our bodies the exercise they need every day. How much exercise do we need every day? Check out this link to see what the CDC suggests -

https://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/basics/children/

The Wilson Wellness Calendars are a great way to see how on track you are with reaching these goals. Tracking activity level can be a very eye-opening experience and highly motivating.

Mr. Beasley was telling me about an activity he did with his family to motivate some movement. He called it the Fro-Yo Challenge - he challenged his girls to run four laps around the track at Linus Pauling, and then he took them to get frozen yogurt. Try it out with your Wildcat! Thanks for checking in!
